Is double cleansing necessary?

It is useful in the evening if you wear sunscreen or makeup, and unnecessary in the morning for most people.

Double cleansing exists because oil-based and water-based cleansers remove different things. Sunscreen in particular is easier to remove with an oil step first.

Doing it twice a day is where it usually goes wrong.

What may be happening

  • A single cleanse may be leaving sunscreen behind
  • Cleansing twice in the morning may be stripping skin
  • The second cleanser may be too strong

What people usually notice

  • Residue on a cotton pad after cleansing
  • Congestion despite a long routine
  • Morning tightness

Common routine mistakes

  • Double cleansing morning and night
  • Using a strong foaming second cleanse
  • Scrubbing during the oil step

What to prioritize

  • Double cleanse in the evening when wearing sunscreen or makeup
  • Keep the morning to one gentle cleanse
  • Choose a mild second cleanser
