Dryness & hydration · Routine
How do I layer hydration properly?
Apply water-based layers to slightly damp skin, thinnest first, and finish with something that slows how fast that water leaves.
Humectants attract water. Without a step over the top, that water can leave as quickly as it arrived, which is why hydrating serums alone sometimes make skin feel tighter.
Two light layers plus a moisturizer usually outperforms one thick product.
What may be happening
- Hydrating layers may be evaporating without anything sealing them
- Skin may be fully dry before the layers go on
- The last step may be too light to hold anything
What people usually notice
- Skin feeling tight shortly after a hydrating serum
- Products absorbing instantly with no lasting comfort
- Comfort in the evening that is gone by morning
Common routine mistakes
- Using humectants alone in dry air
- Applying to bone-dry skin
- Layering four hydrating products with no seal
What to prioritize
- Work on slightly damp skin
- Layer light to rich
- Always finish with a moisturizer
