Oil & combination · What this usually means

Why is my skin oily but still feels dry?

Oil and water are separate things in skin. You can produce plenty of surface oil and still feel tight, which is usually described as dehydration rather than dryness.

Skin type describes how much oil skin produces. Hydration describes how much water the upper layers hold. Those two move independently, which is why shine and tightness can show up on the same face on the same day.

Routines that treat shine alone tend to strip, and stripped skin usually feels tighter later. Routines that only add rich creams feel heavy without addressing the water side at all.

What may be happening

  • Surface oil and water content are being treated as the same problem
  • The cleanse may be pulling harder than the rest of the routine puts back
  • Hydration steps are missing, so the moisturizer has little to hold

What people usually notice

  • Tightness within a minute of cleansing
  • Shine through the centre of the face by midday
  • Skin that feels oily and rough at once

Common routine mistakes

  • Cleansing more often to control shine
  • Skipping moisturizer in the morning
  • Replacing hydration with a heavier cream

What to prioritize

  • Make the cleanse gentler before changing anything else
  • Add light water-based hydration to damp skin
  • Keep a lightweight moisturizer in the morning

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Hydrate

Adds water-based comfort in light layers.

  3. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • Non-stripping cleanser
  • Watery hydrating layer
  • Lightweight gel or emulsion moisturizer
