Dryness & hydration · What this usually means

Is my skin dry or dehydrated?

Dry skin produces little oil and tends to stay that way; dehydrated skin is short on water and can happen to any skin type, including oily.

Dryness is about oil and is fairly consistent across the year. Dehydration is about water, shows up suddenly, and often follows a change in cleanser, weather or exfoliation.

The practical difference is what you add: dryness usually wants richer texture, dehydration wants water-based layers first.

What may be happening

  • A recent cleanser or exfoliation change may have shifted water content
  • Seasonal air may be pulling moisture faster than usual
  • Oil production may be normal while water content is not

What people usually notice

  • Tightness that appeared recently rather than always
  • Shine and tightness together
  • Fine lines looking more visible when skin feels tight

Common routine mistakes

  • Adding a heavy cream to dehydrated skin
  • Assuming oily skin cannot be dehydrated
  • Exfoliating to remove flakiness

What to prioritize

  • Add water-based hydration before richer textures
  • Check whether anything changed in the last month
  • Keep cleansing gentle while you assess

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Hydrate

Adds water-based comfort in light layers.

  3. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • Hydrating toner or essence
  • Lightweight humectant serum
  • Moisturizer weighted to the season
