Texture & pores · What this usually means

Why does my skin feel rough even when it looks fine?

Roughness you feel more than you see is usually surface dryness or build-up, and it responds to hydration before it responds to exfoliation.

The surface holds onto more when it is dry, which is why rough skin often improves within days of better hydration and gets worse with harder scrubbing.

Exfoliation has a role, but it works better on comfortable skin than on tight skin.

What may be happening

  • Surface dryness may be the main driver
  • Exfoliation may be too frequent and causing a cycle
  • Cleansing may be leaving skin tight

What people usually notice

  • Skin feels rough to the touch but looks even
  • Roughest in the hours after cleansing
  • Products sitting on top instead of sinking in

Common routine mistakes

  • Scrubbing harder
  • Exfoliating daily
  • Dropping hydration because skin feels congested

What to prioritize

  • Improve hydration for two weeks before exfoliating more
  • Keep the cleanse gentle
  • Use one exfoliating step at most

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Target

One focused step for the thing you most want to change.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • Hydrating essence
  • Gentle exfoliating step used sparingly
  • Moisturizer with a smoothing finish

Next step

See whether hydration or renewal should come first for you.
