Building a routine · Understanding

What is the difference between skin type and skin condition?

Type describes how much oil skin tends to produce; condition describes how it is behaving right now, and conditions change.

Type is relatively stable and mostly about oil. Condition covers dehydration, sensitivity, dullness and congestion — things that shift with season, routine and stress.

Most routine disappointment comes from buying for a type while the day-to-day problem is a condition.

What may be happening

  • The routine may be built for a type rather than current behavior
  • A seasonal shift may have changed what skin needs
  • A condition may be temporary and self-resolving

What people usually notice

  • Skin behaving differently across the year
  • Products that suited you last winter feeling wrong now
  • Two areas of the face needing different things

Common routine mistakes

  • Locking a routine to a type label
  • Ignoring seasonal change
  • Treating dehydration as dryness

What to prioritize

  • Describe how skin behaves this month, not what it is labelled
  • Keep the core routine and adjust textures seasonally
  • Revisit the routine when the weather changes

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Hydrate

Adds water-based comfort in light layers.

  3. Target

One focused step for the thing you most want to change.

  4. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

  5. Protect

Daily sun protection in the morning.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • Core products that work year-round
  • Seasonal moisturizer weights

Next step

The questionnaire reads current behavior rather than a fixed type label.
