Dryness & hydration · Routine
Why does my skin get flaky in winter?
Cold outdoor air and heated indoor air both hold less moisture, so the same routine that worked in summer often leaves skin short.
Seasonal flaking is usually about the environment rather than the products failing. The routine has not changed; the conditions around it have.
The fix is normally texture and layering, not an entirely new routine.
What may be happening
- Indoor heating may be lowering humidity all day
- The moisturizer may be too light for the season
- Exfoliation may be continuing at a summer frequency
What people usually notice
- Flaking around the nose and cheeks
- Makeup clinging to dry patches
- Skin feeling fine outdoors and tight indoors
Common routine mistakes
- Scrubbing away flakes
- Keeping the summer routine unchanged
- Adding actives to fix roughness
What to prioritize
- Move to a richer moisturizer for the season
- Add a hydrating layer under it
- Reduce exfoliation until skin feels comfortable
