Building a routine · Understanding

Do I really need ten steps?

No. Ten steps is a description of an approach, not a requirement — most people do better with four or five roles they keep consistently.

The ten-step framing came from listing every possible category, not from a recommendation that everyone use all of them.

The useful question is how many roles your skin needs, and whether you will do them tomorrow.

What may be happening

  • Steps may be duplicating each other
  • The routine may be too long to sustain
  • Results may be impossible to attribute

What people usually notice

  • Skipping steps on busy days
  • Products expiring before they are used
  • Not being able to name each product’s job

Common routine mistakes

  • Treating step count as progress
  • Adding before auditing
  • Copying someone else’s shelf

What to prioritize

  • Audit what you own by role
  • Remove duplicates
  • Keep the routine short enough to repeat daily

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Hydrate

Adds water-based comfort in light layers.

  3. Target

One focused step for the thing you most want to change.

  4. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

  5. Protect

Daily sun protection in the morning.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • One product per role you actually need
