Toner or essence — do I need both?

Usually not. Both are early hydrating layers in a modern Korean routine, so one is generally enough unless your skin is very dry.

The historical difference between the two has largely dissolved. What matters is how many watery layers your skin actually benefits from.

More layers is not automatically better; it just takes longer.

What may be happening

  • Both products may perform the same job
  • Very dry skin may genuinely benefit from two layers
  • The routine may be long without being more effective

What people usually notice

  • Two similar watery products in the routine
  • No noticeable difference when one is skipped
  • A routine that feels long but not more effective

Common routine mistakes

  • Adding both because a routine list included both
  • Judging by category name
  • Skipping the moisturizer that holds them in

What to prioritize

  • Keep one watery layer unless skin is very dry
  • Always finish with a moisturizer
  • Test by removing one for two weeks

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Hydrate

Adds water-based comfort in light layers.

  2. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • One hydrating watery layer
  • A moisturizer that holds it in
