How do I patch test a new product?

Apply a small amount to the same spot — inner forearm or along the jaw — once a day for several days before using it on the whole face.

A patch test will not predict everything, but it catches the most obvious mismatches cheaply.

The reason it fails for most people is that they test once. Reactions often appear on the third or fourth exposure, not the first.

What may be happening

  • Reactions may build over repeated use rather than appearing immediately
  • Several new products may make the source impossible to identify

What people usually notice

  • Nothing on day one, irritation by day four
  • Reacting only where products overlap

Common routine mistakes

  • Testing once and assuming it is safe
  • Testing two products in the same period
  • Testing on an area that never reacts

What to prioritize

  • Test the same spot daily for four to five days
  • Test one product at a time
  • Use the jawline if facial skin is the concern

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • Small sizes or samples when available

Next step

Introduce anything new into a routine that is otherwise steady.
