Sensitivity · Routine

Can sensitive skin exfoliate?

Often yes, but less frequently and more gently than most routines assume — and not at all while skin is actively reactive.

Frequency matters more than strength for reactive skin. Once every week or two is a reasonable starting point, and skipping a week is never a setback.

If skin is stinging, flushing or feeling tight, exfoliation waits.

What may be happening

  • Frequency may be higher than skin tolerates
  • Two products in the routine may both exfoliate
  • Skin may currently be in a reactive period

What people usually notice

  • Smoothness followed by tightness a day later
  • Increasing reactivity over several weeks
  • Products that used to be fine starting to sting

Common routine mistakes

  • Exfoliating on a fixed schedule regardless of how skin feels
  • Using a scrub and a chemical exfoliant
  • Exfoliating through a reaction

What to prioritize

  • Start at once every one to two weeks
  • Pause entirely during reactive periods
  • Keep only one exfoliating product in the routine

Where this fits in a routine

  1. Cleanse

Removes the day without leaving skin feeling stripped.

  2. Moisturize

Holds hydration in place and softens the surface.

Product characteristics that tend to fit

  • A single gentle exfoliating step
  • Comforting moisturizer for the night after

Next step

Set an exfoliation rhythm that matches how your skin reacts.
